Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
It is kinda pricey at $50 for 12 cans, but we are eating it with cherry preserves and it is delicious. If you are thinking about adding comfort food to your preps, we give it a big thumbs up.

here they say it is 1.75 per can (2001 article) http://www.mainegoodies.com/gourmet/...FTQkGAodCTzN3g here it is 5 a can INFLATION? |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
I have noticed the price of Spam has risen sharply as well. Food is one of those things, it just costs a certain ammount to produce. It either has to go up in price or down in quality with inflation.

Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
I ordered mine from MRE Depot. (with which I am not associated in any way)
I bet there are other places that have it. The brand I tried is B&M Brown Bread in a can. |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
My Mom used to make it for me when I was a child. It was the best with butter and cherry jam.
I may have to talk her into makeing some more. E-A |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
EA
Get the recipe please and post it. I was thinking we could make it ourselves much cheaper if we had a good recipe. |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
I'll do it.
May take a while but that is some good stuff for a bread lover like me. E-A |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
Yes, kind of halfway between bread and cake. Soft and tender and not cloying sweet, so you could probably eat it with cheese if you wanted. But with cherry preserves, pure dessert heaven.

Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
never even heard of it till today, is that a yankee thing?
|
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
I think so, but my Southern wife also enjoyed it as a child so I think it spread. Her mom bought this same brand. It has been around a long time.
I was looking around and this store sells it for the same price per case, but if you found anything else you liked, they have free shipping for orders over $50, which would be a significant savings. http://www.mainegoodies.com/gourmet/...FQtpGAodIw4S2g |

"Says the Yankee". Your avatar says your from the "midwest". Uhh, I got some bad news for ya' Hoss... I don't quite know how to say this... HAHA, no offense, just having a little fun on a Friday night.   As a diehard Southerner (born in the coalfields of Southwest Va... Daddy coal miner, both Granddaddys coal miners, Great-grandaddys coal miners, etc.) I would like to set the record straight. The following are Southern states: Virginia (excluding the area outlying D.C.) West Virginia (barely... chickensh#t Union wanna be's!) Kentucky North Carolina South Carolina Alabama Georgia Arkansas Northern Texas (the Southern part is now Hispanic... YAY!) Northern Florida (the Southern part is now Hispanic... YAY!) Louisiana and Tennessee (God's country) The following are Yankee (or otherwise) states that should have been Southern states: Southern Missouri North and South Dakota Montana Idaho (parts of) Oregon (parts of) Nevada (parts of) Arizona If you are not in the above Southern state list, you are not Southern. If you wish to be Southern... move to the South, fear God, learn to slur your words and not speak like a Munchkin' on speed, and RELAX! And most importantly, don't tell us how it's "Done up North". Remember, there is a reason you LEFT the North... don't turn the place you're running TO into the place you just LEFT. That would be.. well.. completely moronic. Not to mention annoying to the natives who already hate you if you don't follow the above rules. Sorry for the hijack, but it's Friday night and Yeller' loves his Friday night bourbon.:s13: |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
This should get interesting...
Again, sorry for the hijack. |

But i had to add here...THERE IS NO WEST VIRGINIA! As the constitution does not allow the federal gov to change state boundries!....and more on the hypocracy..."west" virginia was allowed to seceed from virginia with the blessing of the feds, but they killed southerners for trying the same thing:favorites21: ...alright now....where were we? oh yes beans...Beans.. |

You are absolutely correct. Pre-civil war Virginia included West Virginia. The state of Virginia was seperated by the War between the States (Civil War for the uneducated...) kiddingkidding... Back to beans, back to beans... |

Sounds like an all-night-mart where drunks and loose women go to buy rubbers and Mad Dog 20-20 before going home... Good Lord you'd think the guy could think of an ID that doesn't make one think of a "Barely Legal" magazine, slurpies, and "40's of the Bull, yO!" Why do I get the feeling I'm asking for it?:boxing: Bring it on "Mr. AM-4-PM Convinience Mart":. Is he a towelhead like all the other convinience-mart owners?:hahaha: |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
No problem with the Yankee fun. Now let me get this towel on my head to say shelf life estimate I read is 5 years.

Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
I’ve been hearing for years now about how the South will rise again.
Well it’s about damn time, the old south ( the one that I’ve known for the last 30 years ) could sure use a makeover. Today’s south has overly adopted corporate America’s fast food restaurants……to their own detriment. You could start by opening up some family owned restaurants. And get some bread that is not emulsified - - meaning it should go stale after a day or two, if not eaten. I always get a kick out of having breakfast in a southern dinner. After ordering eggs, the waitress will inevitably ask if you want any meat! To a Southern a meal just isn’t a meal unless something gets killed. |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
I like getting grits that are not instant at Southern diner breakfasts. Not the same food group at all as the quick copy kind.

Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
Ouch, good comeback on the "foaming at the mouth" thing.
First off.. "Ole Yeller'" was the most perfect hunting, protectionist, loyal, loveable dog and/or being in the history of the world. (okay maybe just in "movie world".) I... like ole Yeller', am a good, loving, protecting, and basically honorable being... that has been driven damn near mad. Not by a Coon biting me on the ass, but by: The flooding of FRN's into the world economy. The debasing of the currency. The failure to secure our borders from diseased and depraved individuals. The failure to control government spending. The pathetic Political correctness that paralizes common sense. The near 50% (after all is said and done) taxes on US citizens. (what was the tax percentage before the Boston Tea Party by the way? Hmmmm?) The blatant destruction of the second amendment. The attempted destruction of the Christian principles that the founding fathers expoused and built this successful country upon. The failure and inability to protect this country from even the most basic of threats. (i.e. "Uhhh we knew that towelheads tried to blow up the WTC in 1997, but we never figured they would try it again") The welfare state... Too lazy to work? We'll send you a check. Etc., etc, etc., ad nauseum. I could give 100 more examples. And this isn't coming from some tree-hugging Commie, I was a Sonar Technician on a Nuclear fast-attack submarine (SSN693) during Desert Storm I. So... the direction this country is going... yes... I would say at this point I am indeed "foaming at the mouth." |
Re: Taste Test - Canned Boston Brown Bread
I loved that movie too, and sure am glad our current loyal, protective hardworking dog can get immunized.
She is having an after dinner bone now. But she does her patrols with such regularity and dutifulness and if anyone gets near the wife when they go somewhere together she sure lets them know they better be nice. |
